Currey Ingram Academy Was Designed To Embrace Neurodiversity

The human mind has billions to trillions of neural pathways. Any single one of these can affect up to 10,000 others. Therefore, it’s easy to understand why no two people are exactly alike and to appreciate that all individuals learn uniquely.

Of all the boarding schools in the south, Currey Ingram Academy stands out because its core educational, social, and athletic foundations embrace neurodiversity at every level for each student. Every student can learn, succeed, and socialize in an environment beyond classroom instruction because that is how the curriculum is.

Memorable Experiences

Boarding schools in the south are advantageous because we are in one of the country's most diverse areas. Our students have access to an expansive campus with everything that Nashville and the surrounding areas offer. Our students get to experience unique and memorable classroom experiences. These memories will help to solidify neural pathways and create stronger connections within the brain, making lessons more likely to be retained.

Cognitive Abilities Are Ever-Changing

Unlike other boarding schools in the south, which may rely on a “cookie-cutter” or standard approach to education, Currey Ingram Academy operates on evidence-based practices, small class sizes, and social-emotional learning, among other methods. One of the foundational principles built into our programs is that cognitive abilities change constantly. We keep a constant watch on each student by keeping formal records within their ILP so that we can best gauge and monitor where they are and where they need to be.

Zone Of Proximal Development

Another thing that sets Currey Academy apart from other boarding schools in the south is that we prioritize zones of proximal development and scaffolding throughout our programs. Psychologist Lev Vygotsky first described the zone of proximal development in the early 20th Century. This theory essentially refers to the gray area where skills are too complex for a child to master on their own but can do so successfully with encouragement and guidance from someone more knowledgeable. We provide an optimal learning environment to create just enough of a challenge for our students to actively seek learning without feeling pressured to perform like everyone else.

As one of the only private schools in the south designed exclusively for students with learning differences that affect the brain’s processing abilities, we strive to offer the best academic and social experiences for our students and their families. That includes embracing and understanding the diverse neural capabilities of our students. Ultimately, we believe in a student-centered educational experience.

Currey Ingram Academy is driven to provide an exceptional K-12 day or boarding school experience for students with learning differences. Neurodiversity is built into our system, and our small class sizes, evidenced-based instruction, and experienced educators create the ideal learning environment for our eager-to-learn student body.
