Back-to-School Tips for Students with Learning Differences

As summer winds down, families naturally begin preparing to head back to school. This time of year brings excitement, but for students with learning differences like ADHD and dyslexia, it can also bring anxiety and uncertainty. Fortunately, with a few intentional steps, the transition back to school can be smoother and more empowering for your child.

Start Routines Early
Children with learning differences often benefit from predictable routines. The Child Mind Institute recommends easing into school-year schedules at least two weeks in advance. This might include adjusting bedtime and wake-up times, reintroducing morning routines, and limiting screen time before bed. These small shifts can help regulate your child’s internal clock and reduce anxiety as the first day approaches.

Preview the School Environment
New classrooms, new teachers, and even new lockers can be overwhelming. That’s why we provide several opportunities for both new and returning students to get familiar with campus ahead of time. Events like New Student Lunches, Back-to-School Conferences, and even Zoom meetings with teachers and counselors offer valuable time for students to connect, ask questions, and ease into their surroundings. According to Understood.org, previewing a school setting can significantly lower first-day stress and build confidence.

Stay in Close Communication with Educators
No one knows your child better than you do. Sharing what strategies and supports work best—whether that’s movement breaks, visual schedules, or assistive technology—helps teachers provide an individualized approach from day one. Education Week emphasizes the power of early collaboration between parents and educators to improve both academic and social-emotional outcomes for students with learning differences.

You’re Not Alone
If your child learns differently, you already know that preparation and partnership are key. At Currey Ingram Academy, we’re here to work alongside you, providing structure, support, and encouragement every step of the way. With the right environment, students with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences don’t just adjust to school, they thrive!
